Was Avatar written for a foreign audience?
The character of Colonel Miles Quaritch (played by Jake Sully), and the characters of Parker Selfridge (played by Giovanni Ribisi), were ultra- simplistic cartoons. The principal couple Jake Sully and Neytiri were better fleshed out, but nowhere near as complex as the lovers in Titanic. I wonder if it was deliberately made more simplistic so that upcoming markets like China, India and Africa could easily watch the movie without struggling with difficult cultural references.

It looks like it is going to be only the second movie in history (behind Titanic) that is going to break a billion dollars in the international market only. The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King is at $742.1 million international which Avatar should pass today or tomorrow.

I mean if I look at James Cameron’s six previous films it seems as if each movie had well developed characters. Even "the Abyss" which was as close as James Cameron has had to a failure of a movie, had good solid performances by Ed Harris & Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio.

Titanic (#1 of 1997)
True Lies (#3 of 1994)
Terminator 2: Judgment Day (#1 of 1991)
The Abyss (#24 of 1989)
Aliens (#7 of 1986)
The Terminator (#21 of 1984)

Do you think that he deliberately tried to write the characters as simplistic so that the movie would be accessible to everyone without any struggle?
I just think the characters in his earlier films were so vivid. You could feel the fear and identify with their dreams. He used some great actors. He is fundamentally a writer. There was virtually no dramatic tension, and only one small segment that could be called an unexpected plot twist. You can watch Terminator 25 years later, when the technology has long ago been trumped many times over, and still be on your edge.
It is more like an incredible amusement park ride.
I know the movie passed $1 billion worldwide, I meant $1 billion in the "international" market (non-USA).

The movie is an amazing achievement, and I would recommend it to anyone. But so was King Kong (1939) and Wizard of Oz. The technical wizardry of King Kong was groundbreaking for its day. But it is still a great movie 70 years later with snappy dialogue and intriguing characters and moments of extreme pathos. When the old lady throws the necklace into the water in Titanic your eyes tear up even if you’ve seen it dozens of times.
Something I have found to be true where most entertainment mediums are concerned:
The simpler something is, the more massive the target audience is.
The absolute best movies are usually incredibly polarizing and have as many haters as fans, if not more haters.
Watchmen - look at fan (not so much critic) reviews - it’s either loved or hated with little in between.
Tarintino - same boat, he’s incredibly loved by his fans and incredibly hated by his critics.
Childrens movies, the most successful ones usually have the simplest most cliche plot - this carries over to block busters.
I really loved Avatar. I thought it was an incredibly good movie, but I’ll hand it to you, the characters are, in many cases, rather two dimensional.
About 1/3 of Avatars profits so far are from the U.S. This movie, unlike many others is actually showing everywhere at the same time, usually other markets have to wait for a movie, meaning most of them see it through pirated sources first. By opening up globally at more or less the same time that was avoided. The United States does NOT have 1/3 the earths population, we’re still the biggest single source of income for that movie.

U might be right, but I have the feeling that Cameron was so intent on his CGI in "Avatar" that he slightly neglected other aspects of the film. The story was definitely not original. The dialogue was quite cheesy at times. And the acting was just average.
Also Cameron (along with Peter Jackson) tends to be weak in the editing department. His films are too long.

The way I see it, Avatar may not be original but the reason why it had not been created earlier was because the focus was on the believability of the Na’vi. James Cameron wanted to make the Na’vi real, Pandora real and such. The focus of the movie, was to obviously make it real enough that there was a possibility of it occurring. Not to mention the development of how the terrain was made to react to whatever came through, so I read somewhere anyway. With the focus obviously on the graphics, would you really want to take the eyes of the movie goer away from the scenery and details with complicated plots and characters?

You are probably right, but I don’t think that made the movie any less of a treat for American viewers..
And AVATAR has already surpassed a billion dollars worldwide; it had grossed $1,098,736,685 as of January, 3, 2010…

I don’t think they made it simple for overseas audiences, have you seen the complex relationships in Chinese movies, most of their influences come from historical accounts, these often are very complicated. if anything they have made it simplistic for the American Audiences, looking throughout American cinema historically relationships seemed more complex, including domestic violence and alcoholism even in the big budget movies.
Scenodly, the inclusion of references to real-world events is a mistake (notably the 9/11 one with the tree), the reason being a film that has a shallow plot cannot seriously convay a message like that.
I leave you with one thing I have notice this films is a remake of FernGully: The Last Rainforest (1992), just watch that and save money.
